Greetings in His matchless Name,
I have been working laboriously on a new study on the subject of angels. It has been enlightening, exciting and hopefully, as much of a blessing to its recipients (possibly you), as it has been to me. One evening after about 3 hours on the computer I instantly experienced total blindness in my right eye. It was just as if someone flipped a switch! Utter blackness…not even pinpoint of light. By morning most all of the sight returned, praise His Name!
I saw two ophthalmologists, who had no answers. Long-time friends from my years at Faith Baptist as pastor (Mr. & Mrs. Bob & Janice Daubert), suggested I go to Wills Eye/Jefferson Hospital in downtown Philadelphia. In fact, knowing I was apprehensive about driving, they volunteered to drive me there. They did so. (THANK YOU BOB AND JANICE!) I never dreamed that I would be admitted, so I didn’t even bring my Bible with me on the trip. (However, I did try to witness to all of the nurses and doctors, using the Bible on my phone. I would even ask them to read verses I would highlight for them. I have been to a number of different hospitals over the years, but I have never met such skilled, knowledgeable, friendly, professional and helpful Doctors and nurses before. It was quite an experience.) Of course, they did admit me, and I spent several days as a patient and they ran numerous tests to try to track down the problem. As a result of the tests, they decided that it was probably due to something in my carotid artery breaking off and travelling to the area of my brain that controls vision. They concluded that I had suffered a mini-stoke or TIA, as well.
While there I developed a breathing issue. Every 45 seconds (I timed them) I could not seem to get my breath. I would have to take 2 or 3 deep breaths and then breathe normally again, until the next 45 seconds. The day after I got home, I had an even more severe breathing issue. I thought I would soon take my last breath that day. To make matters worse, I fell in my family room and somehow injured my rib cage and could barely get back on my feet. I live alone so there was no one available to help me. That was several days ago now, and the slightest movement still causes intense pain. Since all of this has taken place, nothing has improved. I am somewhat confused as well as concerned. My brain is foggy and my memory is worse. Physically I am very weak. Today is the worst day so far, and I fear that my preaching/teaching ministry is rapidly coming to an end. My ministry is the second most important love of my life…Shirley is the first! I miss her every day. (It has been 4 years since she went to Heaven.)
I have rarely ever begged anyone for prayer for myself, but that is the purpose of this note. I will soon turn 89 years of age so it is not surprising that things are winding down, but I was hopeful that I would be able to continue some kind of a ministry until the Lord actually calls me home.
One final request…my best friend in this world, brother and evangelist, Herb Brail, has suffered a major stroke, paralyzing his entire right side. His wife is by his side, but it is a long and lonely vigil. They need, and deserve, our collective prayer support. Thank you if you will do so.
(I suffered a similar situation with my left side quite a number of years ago, but completely recovered from the paralysis but have had several TIA’s or mini strokes. One Sunday evening at the Rio Grande Bible Baptist Church near Cape May, NJ, Shirley and I were driving from our motel to the church. I had a complete “black out” on the way, about 1 mile from the church. Shirley was in a wheelchair, but I wheeled her up the ramp into the church, set up my video projector for a Powerpoint presentation to go with my message. I preached the entire message, but have no memory of any of this! I woke up in Cape May hospital about 3 AM with my wife, Pastor Jeff McLeod, and a man from the church by my bed! I had no idea where I was or what I was doing in the hospital! They said I had both a TIA and temporary amnesia. I begged Pastor McLeod to send me a tape of the message to see how bad it was, and he kept stalling. Finally, he did so, and I listened and the message was fine. I had preached this prophetic message several times before in different churches. He even said that most people in the congregation didn’t notice anything was wrong…I was preaching apparently from memory.
I guess I preach better when I am unconscious! )
Sincerely in the Savior,
Pastor (emeritus) Paul C. Fedena
