THE CHEMISTRY OF CALVARY
TEXT: I Pet.1:18-20 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
THESIS: To show the necessity of the Blood of Christ on the Cross for absolution from sin.
INTRO.:
A. Red cancels out red! Sin is pictured in the Bible as the same color as blood - red, scarlet or crimson.
Is.1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
B. There are 2 crimson streams which run throughout the Bible: the scarlet stream of man's sin & the crimson fountain of atoning blood. It is sin, sin, sin & blood, blood, blood. The scarlet stain of sin is cancelled out only by the crimson stream of blood! It is interesting chemistry, indeed Divine chemistry that red blood cancels out scarletsin! It is "THE CHEMISTRY OF CALVARY"!
I. THE POLLUTION OF SIN:
A. Sin Demands A Sacrifice:
ILLUS.: When God created man, he had no sin & thus no need of a sacrifice for sin. Something happened to man when he sinned. There are several theories: Peter Ruckman says man (& woman) received their blood when they ate of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good & evil. He says it wasn't an apple, but grapes which they ate. He points to the "blood of the grape" in Deut. 32:14 ("thou didst drink of the pure blood of the grape") & says that Adam & Eve received their blood when they partook of that fruit. He suggests that that is why women paint their mouths red even today!
Dr. M.R. DeHaan taught that since "the life is in the blood" man received his blood when God breathed into his nostrils & he "became a living soul."
1. God shows that man's blood is now tainted thru sin thru Adam's sin.
2. Acts 17:26 says that "(God) hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth."
NOTE: In this sense we are all "brothers" - "blood brothers" - "SINFUL blood brothers!"
Rom.5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
3. Sin calls for a sacrifice to cancel out its effects.
B. Sin Demands a Savior:
1. Since we are all sinners & our blood is tainted by our sin we cannot save ourselves or our "blood brothers"!
2. Somehow God had to devise a plan to rescue man from sin & its consequences - eternal death in hell!
TRANS.: The pollution of sin demands a sacrifice & a Savior. The pollution of sin demands a solution for sin...
II. THE SOLUTION FOR SIN:
A. The Blood of an Innocent Victim:
1. The first reference to a sacrifice, and by implication, blood, was immediately after man's fall in the Garden.
ILLUS.: The first mention of anything in the Bible is important & usually provides a key to its interpretation anywhere that word or subject appears in the Script. In Gen. 3:21 we have the ref. to the sacrifice of innocent animals to provide coverings for Adam & Eve. 3 Bible principles are established:
1. Salvation must be of the Lord or God's gift. Jn.3:16
2. It must be by the death of an innocent substitute...
I Pet.2:22-24 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
3. It must be by blood: I Pet.1:18-20
B. The Blood of a Sinless Substitute:
1. Animals do not sin, but of course have no concept of sin or rebellion, therefore their slaughter in sacrifice could only provide an insufficient substitutionary atonement for man.
2. Christ on the other hand, though sinless, could become a Substitute for us by becoming a man & taking our sin & its penalty on Himself.
3. Sin demands the blood, or it will conclude in judgment.
ILLUS.: The broken law of God demands either judgment or blood! When the Ark of God was stolen by the Philistines & finally returned to Israel, they were so joyous that the men of Beth-Shemesh lifted the Mercy Seat to see if its contents had been disturbed. They looked briefly upon the broken Law of God without the blood-covered lid & the result was disastrous.
I Sam.6:19 And he smote the men of Beth-Shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.
Sin (the broken Law) w/out blood demands judgment.
ILLUS.: Bumper sticker: "You are the solution to pollution." That may be somewhat true in the physical realm, but not so in the spiritual. "Christ's BLOOD is the solution to sin's pollution!"
III. THE ABSOLUTION OF SIN:
A. Appropriation Brings Absolution:
Def.: Absolution: "freedom from the consequences of sin." This absolution comes only through the blood of Christ & though a free gift of God, must be personally appropriated.
1. Men need a "blood transfusion" of Christ's sinless blood.
2. The only prerequisite is faith in His atoning blood.
3. Man needs only to go to the "blood bank" of heaven where there is never a blood shortage.
ILLUS.: As wonderful as it is that we can deposit our blood here in a blood bank & weeks later that blood will be used to save someone's life miles away...it is even more wonderful that the "Blood Bank" of heaven stores enough of His blood for all who simply submit to the transfusion! It suits every type & is free to all. It is sinless, "incorruptible," "precious" blood!
B. Absolution Brings Acceptance:
1. The moment you receive your "blood transfusion" you receive absolution - forgiveness of sins - all your sins!
2. That places you in God's family as one of His children & you are "accepted in the Beloved."
Eph.1:6-7 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us ACCEPTED in the beloved. In whom we have redemption THROUGH HIS BLOOD, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
CONCL.:
🔹Here then is the mystical "CHEMISTRY OF CALVARY"! 🔹Why not take advantage of its wonders & accept the eternal life-giving power of the Blood of our wonderful Sinless Savior & His Substitutionary Sacrifice?!
🔹Child of God, "THE CHEMISTRY OF CALVARY" has transformed your life. You have "blood rights" to the family of God & are "joint heirs w/Christ".
🔹Isn't it about time you began to act like a "child of the King"?! A servant of the Savior? He wants you to become a "living sacrifice" to Him now!
